so back in the day when kite flying was a major time...im talking about when there were no computers or mobile phones...it was either cricket all day long or flying kites. The latter one was frowned upon for some strange reason. As if indulding in it was some sort of sin and Naughty kids did it.!
Anyway you could get a bunch of different flying threads, ranging from the cheap and cheerful, Pankha (The fan) or some of the expensive ones, Paanda (panda). For some strange reason i forget the names of any other threads available back then.
So if you were mummy daddy you would buy your thread from a local market but if you were crazy about it or just plain poor, you make your own!!!
I will now attempt to teach you to make this magical thread. ( to keep the continuity of the story i will carry on in the past tense and in the third person!)
Disclaimer: This should not be attemped at home. If you try to do this it will no doubt choke your chicken and make your eyes water!!!
I kid!!!!!
So you took the blank thread. You also went down to your local bazar and bought the following three things!!!
1. Some fish scales2. Some ground glass (very important)3. Colour ( erm to make the thread look nice?)

So you open up an empty tin of some sort and boiled some water in it. Next you took the fishscales and began to cook them. You keep on cooking it until disolves into thick liquidy form. Next add glass.then add colour. Keep mixing!!!while this is happening you could bide the time by going out and having a smoke in the street. or stand aimlessly in the street. or run your hands through your hair when over you see a girl in the window of the first floor of your neighbours house.
Back to the thread then...so now you go the roof and affix to reasonably large pieces of food on opposite sides of the roof....here comes the fun part.
You drop the roll of thread in and let it soak up that fishscaly goodness! next tie one side of thread to a piece of food...

with some coloured glass fishscale mixture in your hand let the thread pass through your hands. Make sure the thread is hinged on the pieces. Depending on the length of the thread this will prob take you 30 mins!!!
Now let it dry and your done!
get one of young uns to roll it up in a ball ( ???? Do you know what the word is ???)) for you.

Frowned upon that’s off I wonder why anyone one frown upon kite flying. As if you guys use to make your won thread that’s too cool. I was surprised when you suggested the grounded glass. Cool article interesting to know it was like this back then.
kite flying was outlawed after a certain tragic accident...but people still do it especially on basant.
I think most of the threads now produced are chemically prepared!
