Have You Abandoned a Dedicated MP3 Player for a Music-Capable Phone? [Reader Poll]

Have You Abandoned a Dedicated MP3 Player for a Music-Capable Phone? [Reader Poll]: "

With cellphones like the iPhone sporting a good amount of storage space and very capable music players, a lot of people have abandoned the dedicated MP3 player for what their cellphones have to offer. Are you one of them?

I've completely abandoned my iPod since getting my first iPhone, but is it such a wise decision to abandon standalone music players for the sake of a feature-heavy phone?

Music players are everywhere these days, but brands and announcements aside, I've been rethinking my decision lately. A while back, it seemed completely logical to abandon my iPod for the sake of carrying only an iPhone, but now I'm starting to doubt that choice.

Sure there are plenty of benefits to only carrying a music capable phone:

  • Saving space in a bag (or pocket)
  • One less gadget to charge or carry a charger for
  • Streaming music over EDGE or 3G
  • Downloading songs or music videos over the air

But there are plenty of downsides, too:

  • One gadget failure leaves you without a phone and a music player
  • It's difficult to zone out, interruption-free, unless you put your phone into airplane mode
  • Your battery will run down quicker with the extra usage
  • On average, phones sport less physical storage in comparison to standalone players

I'm not so sure that I'll stick with the all-in-one device for very long, but let's hear from you.

Have you abandoned your standalone music player in favor of a music capable phone? Why or why not? Do you regret it like I do? Let's hear it in the comments.
