How many of you believe in witchcraft? Or the supernatural? or the spooky? Or the mysterious?
Today, this tale that I bring to you occurred almost 20 years ago. And i was there first hand to witness it. So this is a firsthand account of it.
“It was a summer night and we had decided to play some cricket in the street. There were no street lights at the time. So each house would have arranged to have a light bulb affixed to the outside of their property. The well off people in the street would go as far as to have a tube light installed.
So anyway we played cricket. We didn’t play the length of the street as we normally did. Instead we played the width of it, which was not that wide. But still it was fun. The game was fast paced and was flowing smoothly.
A couple of the lads just stood around, chatting and observing the game. Seeing how the street was populated, some of the smaller kids had made their way on to street and playing their own little games, careful, not to mingle with the big boys.
Then it happened. The sole bulb that we were relying on, our only source of illumination and lightness switched off. Not only did it switch off, the bulb came loose from its bulb holder and fell, face first onto the concrete ground. The distance that it fell would be at least 5 meters.
Now this is the weird thing. The bulb didn’t shatter. We scurried around for the bulb and eventually found it in one piece. I picked it up. It wasn’t hot. This slightly disturbed me as i expecting the bulb to be hot and therefore, unholdable. Nope, nothing. Nishta.
We stood around for what seemed like minutes wondering what had just happened. Then someone broke the silence by suggesting to plug it back in. So I climbed up the metallic brown gate, with the bulb in one hand. Finally i reached the top. I asked one comrade in arms to switch off the bulb "from the back". This means from the switch. I don’t know why i didn’t just say switch off the switch.
Anyway.
I plugged it in. Unscrewed it. Then screwed it back in to make sure that it was secure. It was.
With the thumbs up from me, one of my partners in crime flicked the switch and on came the light. It came on. It worked. I looked up at the bulb in dumbfounded disbelief. I took a huge gulp and started to long descent down.
Eventually i reached the bottom. I put my feet in my sandals (because climbing bare feet is always easier as no doubt any climbing person will tell you).
i exchanged glances with the people on ground zero. A silent agreement passed between us all. We agreed never to talk about this incident ever again. This secret would accompany us to our graves".
Actually we talk about it every time we meet, but seriously how cool is that shit?
