7 Highly Successful High School Dropouts

7 Highly Successful High School Dropouts: "

Jeremy Farmer PhotographyIt’s a common belief in America these days that without a high school diploma, you have no future. This opinion may be true to some extent, but it’s certainly not a hard and fast rule. There are a lot of highly successful people in this world who never even completed high school.

One of these successful people is Flava Flav, who dropped out of school when he was only 13, although, admittedly, it shows. He’s now planning to return to school to get his G.E.D., and the ordeal may even become a reality show on VH1. He’s not the only celebrity that dropped out of high school and still did well though. In fact, some high school dropouts are actually pretty brilliant.

Dave Thomas

The founder of Wendy’s, Dave Thomas started working in the restaurant industry at only 12 years old. His family was constantly on the move and at age 15, he refused to keep moving with his parents. He was working part time at the Hobby House restaurant in Fort Wayne and dropped out of high school to start working at the business full time.

After working as a mess sergeant during the Korean War, he began working for KFC, where he was able to help turn several of their failing franchises around. In 1969, he sold of the KFC franchises he owned and opened his own restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. He named the restaurant after his daughter, who was actually called Melinda, but was nicknamed Wendy. These days, Wendy’s is the third largest burger chain in America.

In 1993, Dave decided that he didn’t want to set a bad example for any youngsters out there, so he enrolled at Coconut Creek High School and earned his GED.

George Bernard Shaw

George_bernard_shaw

Famed Irish Playwright George Bernard Shaw held an outright animosity towards schooling that he maintained throughout his life. He was quoted as saying, “schools and schoolmasters, as we have them today, are not popular as places of education and teachers, but rather prisons and turnkeys in which children are kept to prevent them disturbing and chaperoning their parent.” Not surprisingly, the writer never completed his own education, having dropped out of the Dublin English Scientific and Commercial Day School.

His main complaints about schooling was the standardization of the curriculum, which he believed deadened the spirit and stifled the intellect. He also deplored the corporal punishment being used in schools, although most modern teachers and parents would agree with him on this issue.

George Eastman

Creator of the Kodak Camera Company, George Eastman, was forced to drop out of school due to financial circumstances. At only 14, his father died and the only way George could keep his two sisters and mother alive was to quit school and begin working as an office boy full time. By the age of 26, Eastman found his true calling and began working to improve the emulsion process involved in photography. He though the liquid emulsions proved quite a problem as they were excessively sticky and had to be used quickly before they dried. In only three years, Eastman had perfected his dry emulsion plates and he started his own photographic business in 1880.

Quentin Tarantino

While a lot of famous directors hone their skills during college, Quentin Tarantino built up his film knowledge by working in a video rental store in Manhattan.

He not only never went to college, but he quit going to Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California in his freshman year. He started learning the acting craft in acting school at the James Best Theatre Company in Toluca Lake, but it really wasn’t until he started working at Video Archives with Roger Avery, also a director these days, that he really began sharpening his future skills. Some people complain about Tarantino’s movies having too much focus on the dialogue, but for a high school dropout, I’d say that’s not such a bad thing.

Richard Pryor

487px-Richard_Pryor_(1986)_(cropped)If comedy really is born from tragedy, then it is only logical that Richard Pryor became one of the top comedians of the seventies. Pryor had anything but an easy life.

He was raised in his grandmother’s brothel, where his mother “worked” and his father served as her pimp. At only ten, his mother abandoned him and his strict grandmother took over his care, beating him whenever she thought he was acting “eccentric.” With a home life like this, it’s not all to surprising that he ended up being expelled from high school at 14.

In the end, Pryor ended up proving the adage that “whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger” and his comedy career was one of the longest lasting and most successful of the last fifty years.

Peter Jennings

Peter Jennings started broadcasting when he was only nine years old. He followed the footsteps of his father, a respected radio broadcaster for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and operated as the host of a CBC children’s program called “Peter’s People.” Surprisingly, his father was out on assignment when Jennings was chosen for the gig and he was furious at the network for hiring his son solely because he was the son of a broadcaster.

When it came to schooling, Jennings was a great athlete, but a terrible student, which he said was due to “pure boredom.” He failed to pass the 10th grade and dropped out as a result. He tried to attend Carleton University, but “lasted about 10 minutes” before he dropped out there.

After school, he started working at The Royal Bank of Canada, but he dreamed of being a professional broadcaster. I’d say did pretty well at meeting those goals, wouldn’t you?

Peter Jackson

PeterJacksonCCJuly09

Before he directed the Lord of The Rings, or even his cult classics like Meet The Feebles, Peter Jackson was just a film-obsessed kid. He was trying to make his own film by age of nine, complete with the special effects he loved to see in shows like “Thunderbirds.” After he saw the original King Kong, he started trying to mimic the stop-motion from the film. He spent his entire childhood and all of his teenage years making short films and developing his own special effect techniques, which even included making his own minuscule models.

When he was 16, he dropped out of high school and started working as an apprentice engraver in a newspaper photography department. He kept living with his parents so he could save money for film-making supplies, which he soon used to begin production on what would become his first full-length film, Bad Taste. When you know that your future is film you don’t have a real need for the three Rs of “reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.”

The Vatican's Secret Storehouse Of Space Knowledge Is On Display At Last [Retro-futurism]: "

The Vatican didn't just torment Gallileo — it also helped further the development of astronomy, with masterpieces like this 18th century Planetarium, created by Martin Benjamin. And now the Vatican's treasures of astronomy are going on display. Gallery below.

No, 25,000 Swedish Lesbians Do Not Live in the Forest

No, 25,000 Swedish Lesbians Do Not Live in the Forest: "

Several Chinese news agencies have reported that 20,000 women live together in a place called “Shakebao” or “Chako Paul City”, said to have been built in the forests of northern Sweden 200 years ago. According to published reports, the lonely female residents of the town have turned to lesbianism to satisfy themselves.

The reports go on to say that any men who attempt to enter the town will be “beaten half to death” by the blonde sentries. The news agencies did not mention how 25,000 lone women were supposed to propagate, but hey, details are a drag.

The Chinese news agency Xinhua even provides a helpful photo of the supposed castle that is in the supposed town (see above).

So many Chinese men believe the far-fetched reports that officials from Sweden have been forced to issue a formal denial that the town exists. So, to clarify for all our Chinese friends out there – 25,000 lesbians do not live in the forests of Sweden. Sounds like a good movie though.

GG hammering Norm Coleman

I am a huge fan of George Galloway (GG). I am also a member of RESPECT. I share many of GG’s views, which are the principles on which RESPECT was built on. Perhaps because I like him a lot that I feel extra sad when GG says things which I believe are ill founded. True to form, in my belief that NO man should go unquestioned no matter what message he delivers (voices for truth included - as truth can never give a bad answer to a question), I want to raise a number of issues here, about GG - the best politician I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. I also contributed to his legal fund against the Telegraph which ran the stories on the fireproof documents (forgeries of course) ‘found’ in the burning Iraqi ministry of oil. - P.S. Despite reassurances that the money would be retuened after the case, I havent got mine back yet, although I’ve not asked for it either.

Anyway,

GG presents a radio Show called “the Mother of all Talkshows” on TalkSport radio. You can go to GG website called spidered news to listen to it. And please do. It’s great to hear his views and a number of the intelligent callers who discuss wmongst other things, political issues.

26-10-07 SpideredNews Galloway 161m:02s

GG: Here’s Mark in Hampstead. Go ahead Mark

M: Yeah Hi George how are you doing.

GG: Hi.

M: Just a question for you. There’s a guy on the internet, I don’t know if you’ve come across him , called Frank Weltner, who talks about a lot about Zionist conspiracy theories.

GG: No I’ve not heard of him, no.

F: Oh right I just really wanted to see what your views are but if you’ve never heard of him…i suppose…

GG: I’ve not but, I’m against most conspiracy theories and when I heard the words Zionism and conspiracy in the same sentence Mark, I always get nervous, because I don’t like anything that smacks of racism and anti-Semitism is of course, racism of the most poisonous kind.

George, what on earth are you talking about? A man of your intellect connecting Zionism with anti-Semetism? Good grief George, you seem to think Zionism is a Yiddish or Hebrew word for Judaism. It’s not! I was flabbergasted when you said this. People who attack Zionism are not being racist. Zionism is a political philosophy which iteself is a great and powerful source of racisism. People who oppose Zionism are not racists, rather, they are the ones who OPPOSE racism. How could you be so utterly wrong my good man?.

There are white Christian Zionists and there are White and Middle East Jewish Zionists (white European Jew converts i.e. Khazars and Semeties respectively) and It’s my opinion there are some Muslim Zionists too (e.g. some Turkmen and some Arabs). Indeed you yourself frequently decry the tyranny of Muslim puppet governments and corrupt Kings. Zionism contains within itself superiority and domination. It draws occidentals and Semites and even black people into its ranks under the guize of monotheastic apocalypic religionis, and then these very people discriminate against the Jews, Christians and Muslims who do not panser to their perverted doomsday vision that what they are work for is what God has proclained in Judaic, Christina and Islamic prophecy, whereas in fact, they are doing the UTTER reverse. It is these Zionists that are ushering in the exact opposite. The tyrannical, evil blind hatred anti-christ prophecy. The evil, oppressive murderous tyranny the Zionists are working towards will not bring the Messiah back, but the Anti-Christ, the dajjal. the beast. You can see it with godless Israel today. None of the Jews or Christins or Muslims that support the godless fake state of Israel today are implementing the code of practive God has revealed to them in their scriptures. Instead they follow the most bleak and hideous and enduring apartheid we have ever seen.

I cannot believe a man of your intelligence can be so totally wrong about this. I strongly advise you to get some research done on this topic George as it is very much to your detriment that you are deeply ignorant on this issue.

27-10-07. GG’s 4 hour marathon. Spidered News. 48m:15s

GG:
Here’s Diane in Newham. Hi Dane. Welcome

D: Hello George.

GG:
Hi.

D: It was about the time the Americans were either going into Afghanistan or had already gone into Afghanistan, and in those days, I used to listen to a different speeh radio station that I think took their news from ITN. And this was a short news trail, and it was Ariel Sharon, and he turned round and said yes, today Afghanistan, tomorow Iraq and then Iran. I just couldn’t believe my ears.

GG:
There’s no doubt Diane that one of the most powerful motives for attacking iran is becasuse it would be an attempt to destroy the very last country in that region that has any ability at all to stand up to Israeli expansion and Israeli dictat. There’s no doubt that the strong supporters of the war in washington are the strongest supporters of Israel and there’s no doubt that Iraq was broken to suit Israel as well as many other reasons and Iran would be as well.

D: YEs but what it means {is that} we’re fighting Israels war.

GG:
Well were really fighting Americas war becasue Israel fights Americas wars. Its not that America works for Israeel its that Israel works for Americaa Dian.

D: YEs but it was all those those years {that it was} already planned.

GG:
OK. Thank you very much Diane in Newham

George is straining in his description of the Iranian opposition against Israel. I get the impression he is trying not to tell the actual reality that the good people of Iran would like nothing better than for that evil fake state to disband so that Palestinians could regain control of their lands once more, I.e. for whatt we know of as Israel to simply collapse. Perhaps he doesn’t want to give any kind of support to those who make those false claims about what Amhadinejad said about Israel, i.e. the lie that Ahmadinajad said he wants to wipe Israel off the map - a lie which is meant to imply total military destruction.

But I have to say, that’s not my Impression. This call has left me with the impression he didn’t mention the reality becasue he would argue against those who say Israel DOED NOT have the right to exist.

And he absolves Israel from blame in US war mongering.

Once again however, he could not be more completely wrong when he gives the ‘corrction’ that Israel is fighting America’s wars. George, answer me this. If Israel is fighting Americas wars, Where was the Israeli contingent in Central and Southern America, Gulf War I (Desert Strom), Bosnia/Kosovo, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Norea, Cambodia, Laos, Somalia? George, you are absolutely 100% wrong on your ideas about the Israeli/US relationship and that of Zionism. Scarily wrong. My most excellent comrade, you need to spend some time researching this. My advice: do it today my son, and do it now!

How could you not know this? I am sure you did your homework on Senator Coleman when you went to Capitol Hill to answer questions on the bogus oil kickbacks allegations. I’m sure you did your homework into the funding of a number of US senators and congressmen. How could you not already know that the heavy pro-Israel Zionist Jewish and Zionst Christian presence in both houses and also the pro-Israel US president. Donb’t you know every presidentail candidate has to publically declare his intention to protect Israel before he can be elected-cum-selected as US president. Don’t you know many of the Media’s tycoons and businessmen are pro-Israeli Zionst Jews and Christians?

GG: And By thy way, I’m not holding any candles for Ahmadinejad. I don’t even like him.

Have you ever met him George? Have you discussed politics with him? Have you researched his politics George?

George. You calim to be a man of God. Religious dogma from scripture indicated homosexuality is a sin. Yet, you seem to fight on the side of those who wish to engage in homosexuality and against those who oppose homosexuality. If you would be so generousm, I’d appreciate it if you would explain why on this issue you believe in God yet rebel against Gods condemnation of this practice.

N: Hi George how are you doing man.

GG: I’m doing fine son thanks for calling

N: Listen, I’ve got enought respect for you George, yeah,

GG: Thanks mate.

N: You know, a member of parliament and speaking out for people and doing everythign you can. But can I ask you one question

GG: Yeah

N: I just want to ask you one question yeah,

GG: Yeah yeah.

N: The country and everyting in the world, its in like, it’s in catatastrophy yeah. Right, now there’s one book, I’m indian by the way yeah, I was born in Hinduism, I just want to let you know that right, but, there’s this(?) book on this earth, that proclaims there’s a prophecy, There’s a prophecy and it’s being fulfilled now. It is actually happening. everything that’s happenened, you know from day one, is happening now.

GG: OK whats the book an what the prophecy Neal

N: The prophecy, that Gog and Magog, will rise again, yeah the west, yeah, and everything which, everything that the Bible has proclaimed has been/is being fulfilled. Believe me. I was brought up in Hinduism, yeah bit I’ve searched every religion and the only explanation I get, yeah, and exactly with England as well, England based its foundation on Christianity, but in recent years, like the last 20 years, it’s lost, it’s divorced the only God that would make it survive.

GG: I think thats probably enough of that from Neal in Ealing.

The Plight of So Many Unpaid Workers...

The Plight of So Many Unpaid Workers...: "Happens all the time. This is nothing new. Workers, imported from other countries, come here with hopes and dreams of being able to make enough money to support their families in whatever country they are from. Very often they come only after paying hefty fees to a middle-man [who pockets most of that money] who gets them the requisite documentation allowing them to be here, and promises the workers that they will be given contracts which will pay them X-dollars and provide them meager benefits [housing]. In the end, they get nothing. Empty promises. Worthless contracts. And no pay. Well that's not wholly true - most will have received housing in a labor 'camp' for as long as they were willing to work...

That spectacular new university, known as KAUST [King Abdullah University of Science and Technology] which opened just a short time ago, was built using the sweat and labor of imported workers. And now, 250 of them are demanding to be paid for the last four months that they have worked - which included overtime - in order to have the university ready to be opened on time. According to the article, 'in four months, the workers received only 600SR [$160.85] each in emergency cash before the Eid holiday.' Yeah. Four months of work - and who knows how many hours those four months were comprised of - for $40.21 per month!!! Ten dollars a week. Since the typical work week for imported laborers, here, is a 48-hour week, without overtime, that means these workers were paid approximately TWENTY CENTS an hour for their efforts blood, sweat and tears - not including the promised 'overtime' pay.

The workers are now demanding 'immediate payment of their late wages, termination of their contracts with end-of-service benefits, and one-way ticket[s] back home.' Yeah. Good luck with those demands. Chances are real good that you're never going to see a dime of the wages you are owed, you certainly are not going to get your end-of-service benefits, and you'll be lucky if you get that one-way ticket back home. Instead, like so many other imported workers who come here, you'll be let go to fend for yourselves, and eventually be rounded up and thrown in jail until your families can come up with the money to pay for your release and buy your ticket back home.

Here is what really happens... The end 'scenario' of these workers that come to toil and labor for eight, ten and twelve hours a day, six days a week, in the heat and hot sun for a mere pittance, regardless of promises made. 'Seventy-one Indian detainees were released from Shumaisy Deportion Center in one single day, Friday, considered to be a record number of any nationality sent back home.' Why, exactly, were they in a deportation center? Well, because the majority of them 'were reported by their respective sponsors as runaway workers.' [Clarification: Because their sponsors did NOT want to have to pay them for the work they had performed.]
That's why. Hasn't anyone given any consideration to the fact that not ALL workers are actually runaways? And, even if there were some runaway workers shouldn't the reason that they ran away in the first place be addressed? I think we all know the answer to that question. Because they were never paid for the work they did and they thought that if they could find someplace else to work then they might stand a chance of at least making a little money as opposed to no money!

The article says, 'around 10 to 15 arrived at the deportation center after their sponsors handed them over... for deportation on their own personal expenses (one-way ticket). To save [the] cost of [a] return air-ticket some unscrupulous sponsors dropped their workers at the deportation center with their exit visas endorsed on passports.' I'm not in charge here, and I don't make any of the rules, but I would think that the government here would be making at least some effort to put a system into place to make this practice stop. Never mind. After all, why would they if it meant forcing a sponsor to put money into an account which guarantees the return of the workers to their respective countries when that would mean less in kick-backs [or whatever practice is in place, here] for them? Them, being the government workers who issued the papers to allow sponsors to bring workers here in the first place.

One 'inmate' awaiting deportation, 'described the occasion as 'celebratory' and 'freedom day' for the deportees, who ecstatically lined up in a long queue to board a bus' that took them to the airport. He says, 'four of the 71 released returned back to the deportation center, and no reason was given why their deportation was put off. ...Pramod Kumar, a Keralite, returned back from the airport for the third consecutive time.' We will never know the disappointment and despair that Mr. Kumar has got to be experiencing.

As if not paying these men isn't enough punishment, salt is rubbed in the wounds as they are disregarded like a piece of trash at a deportation center and told that 'they would be deported in two days.' Instead, the process involves 'a minimum of two months before any detainee gets released from the deportation center.' Two days. Two months. Same same. Or it is in the eyes of authorities and sponsors, here, anyway, in the Sandbox. For shame. For shame.

The inmates, who, no doubt for the most part have done nothing wrong but work hard for no pay and a handful of empty promises, are housed in cells 'Nos. 8 and 9' at the Shumaisy Deportation Center where they are kept in huge groups - there are currently some 450 'inmates' in those two cells - and there would be even more if not for the
reporting of local newspapers which highlighted 'their plight and sufferings due to unhygienic conditions at the center' which was instrumental in bringing the matter to the attention of Indian authorities and getting some 71 of them released.

'A joint petition signed by the mainstream social and cultural organizations such as ICC, OICC, Kelee, KMCC and FOKASA was dispatched to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister, Vyalar Ravi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the Chief Minister of Kerala 'to expedite the deportation of Indian detainees.' The combined efforts by various social organizations, speedy issuance of emergency certificates from [the] Indian Embassy and... airline bookings helped the deportation of Indian detainees... ...the remaining detainees will be sent back home in the near future.' In the meantime, 'A number of inmates are at the center for more than three months and are suffering from several acute and chronic diseases like chicken pox, tuberculosis and asthma,' said R. Muraleedharan, President of the Federal of Keralite Associates in Saudi Arabia.

Sad. Pathetic. And, disgusting. The treatment of these men.
There has GOT to be a better way for them in life... There just has to.

Adaptive Reuse: 15 Creative House & Home Conversions

Adaptive Reuse: 15 Creative House & Home Conversions: "

adaptive-reuse-homes-main

When old billboards, fire towers and grain silos outlive their old purposes, there’s no need to tear them down – especially since they can be transformed into surprisingly modern, livable homes with views to die for. These 15 innovative conversion projects turn the unlikeliest of abandoned structures into dazzling contemporary residences while still preserving their historic features.

Modern Home Made from a Barn & Farm Buildings

barn-turned-modern-home

Old barns and farm buildings often fall into unsightly disuse, but this project by Bjarne Mastenbroek and his Amsterdam-based architecture firm SeARCH proves that such buildings can be not only rescued from ruin, but transformed into stunning hybrids of traditional and modern architecture. The this farmhouse and its outbuildings in Zutphen, Netherlands were given a sleek makeover with vast expanses of glass and an airy, bright interior.

From Decaying Warehouse to Dazzling Design Office

warehouse-turned-design-office

A rusting hulk of an old warehouse in an industrial district doesn’t exactly strike one as likely digs for a design and architecture team. As the top photo depicts, this warehouse in Atlanta, Georgia didn’t look like much before bldgs got a hold of it and turned it into a combined residence and office space, leaving the old rusted beams and paint-chipped bricks in place to preserve a sense of age and history.

Fire Towers Turned Modern Mountain Homes

fire-tower-homes

Raise the alarm: these homes transformed from old fire towers are ablaze with beauty and eco-conscious creativity. The height gives them a treehouse feel, not to mention the amazing views afforded by their lofty locations. They’re already built to withstand the elements, so it doesn’t take much to make them ready for habitation.

Religious Conversions: Old Train Cars are Now Churches

train-cars-into-churches

With the addition of steeples and, in some cases, facades, train cars can be turned into places of worship with surprising ease. Many of these unusual conversions can be found in Russia, where abandoned railway cars are a common sight. It may be a long way from the grandeur of other Russian Orthodox churches, but it’s certainly an innovative way to upcycle these old structures.

Grain Silos Upcycled into Homes and Hotels

grain-silo-homes

Grain silos dot the countryside, a symbol of simple rural living with their simple shapes and metal-clad exteriors. But they aren’t just for storing grain – they can be marvelous homes and hotels as well. The Silo at the Gruene Homestead Inn has been transformed into a 1 bedroom loft apartment, while the Abbey Road Farm Bed & Breakfast has three grain silos incorporated into one large structure.

Factory Turned Modern Condo Complex

old-factory-condo-complex

All too often, old factories are allowed to sit and rot for years after they’re abandoned, but as this conversion shows, these locations can provide the perfect skeleton for modern housing. Located in Philadelphia, this condominium complex not only takes advantage of the bones of the factory buildings, but incorporates new eco-friendly features like rainwater harvesting and solar power.

Romantic Countryside Church Makes a Luxurious Home

church-converted-to-home

You might have a graveyard instead of a front lawn, but that’s a small price to pay for the vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows that come with living in an old church. This restructured church in the English countryside still looks like an aging place of worship on the outside, but the inside is now a luxurious residence.

Classic School House to Contemporary Home

classic-school-house-contemporary-home

Another stunning blend of old and new architecture is this classic-schoolhouse-turned-home in Denver. The original stone structure dates back to the late 1800s, but an ultra-contemporary addition and modern interior make this home anything but quaint.

Compact Modern Living – In Recycled Billboards

billboard-homes

While billboards aren’t likely to be on most people’s radar as potential dwellings, they do have the advantage of being in prime locations, especially in urban environments. One proposal by Front Architects transforms these structures from advertisements to tiny modern homes made of wood, concrete and steel. Exchanging extra space for dazzling views and incredibly convenient locations isn’t such a big sacrifice, is it?

Trailerwrap: Turning Old Trailers into Attractive Homes

trailer-wrap

Single-wide trailers aren’t exactly the height of modern residential architecture. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t have potential. Architect Michael Hughes is the brains behind Trailerwrap, a project that reinvents old trailers by preserving their portability but making them far more aesthetically pleasing.

Home Made from Salvaged Highway Sections

“It’s kind of like Junkyard Wars meets Habitat for Humanity,” says homeowner Paul Pedini of his one-of-a-kind upcycled residence, which incorporates 600,000 pounds of recycled materials – including an entire section of an old highway. The highway panels were used to form the core structural center of the home, creating an interior that’s industrial, yet warm and welcoming.

Water Tower Creatively Converted into Sky House

water-tower-sky-house

This water-tower-turned-house didn’t start out as an ordinary water tower. It was made to look like a house in the sky, just for kicks – but once it was no longer needed to store water, the new owners turned it into an actual house, albeit a very tall one.

Once a Pig Barn, Now a Modern House

Few people would want to live in an old pig sty that’s falling apart at the seams, but the owners of this building saw potential in its historic shell. However, most conventional attempts to transform this pig barn into a home would have spoiled its architectural state. Amazingly enough, their solution was to drop an entire prefabricated home into the shell through the roof, with openings that correspond to those in the existing structure.

Standard Car Garage Becomes Small Home

It’s a quirky and charming A-frame home from the outside, but the origins of this cute little residence are pretty unexpected: it was once a standard car garage. The owners fought with the city to get a permit and were finally allowed to transform the garage into a tiny but adorable home with lots of natural light, a space-saving alternating staircase and warm wood accents.

Abandoned Oil Rigs Could be Luxury Homes and Hotels

There are thousands of abandoned oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, just waiting for some new purpose to save them from being scrapped or merely decaying into the sea. One architecture firm, Morris Architects, believes that these remote structures could be the perfect locations for upcycled luxury hotels and condos on the water. Combined, they could provide an astonishing 80,000 square feet of space, reachable only by boat or aircraft.

Neither Mirth Nor Woe: Eggy Dave

Neither Mirth Nor Woe: Eggy Dave: "Neither Mirth Nor Woe: Eggy Dave

'So, what did you get for your birthday, then?'

'Cricket stuff. Loads of cricket stuff.'

'Nothing personal you understand, old chap, but you're bloody weird.'

Eggy Dave loved his cricket.

While other teenagers were mad keen on their favourite football teams – and our school had far too many Tottenham Hotspur fans to be absolutely healthy - Eggy Dave had but one love: Somerset County Cricket Club.

We had pictures of Liam Brady, Ossie Ardiles and Depeche Mode on our walls. Eggy Dave had Ian Botham and Viv Richards and a healthy disrespect for all things Australian.

So, it was hardly a surprise that his old man, being a member of Taunton's finest sloggers, should wangle him a signed bat and heaps of cricket kit for his birthday.

Eggy Dave was so keen on this particular sport of kings that he had his own set of whites, and was the only kid in the school cricket team that didn't turn out for matches in his PE kit.

'So, what did you get for your birthday, then?'

'Signed bat. New pads. Box. Cricket boots.'

'Wait... you got a box?'

'S'right. It's a good'un, though. It's in me bag 'ere.'

The cricket boxes of our experience were horrible, stained plastic things you shoved down your shorts, and would probably sever your tackle if called into action. Eggy Dave's looked like something an astronaut would wear under his space suit. It is fair to say that this specimen caused a certain amount of school field excitement.

'So,' asked Tranny Gaz, standing, as usual, with his radio pressed to his ear, feeding tinny music in his brain, 'How much ...err... punishment can it take?'

Eggy Dave was a lad of few words, and kept his facts short and brief: 'A lot, I 'spect.'

'D'you reckon,' Gaz said, 'if I kicked you in the bollocks, right, it wouldn't hurt?'

'Probably not.'

Tranny Gaz looked at Dave, then, radio still pumping out the tss-tss-tss of some latest chart hit played through the cheapest consumer electronics known to man, gave us a slantendicular look of pure evil.

'Even if I take a run-up?'

'Try it, if you want.'

Fighting talk.

Big, lanky Gaz in his Doc Martens marched twenty yards up the field, paused, and with a twirl of his little knob switched off his radio for the first time since we met him.

Then, with a fearful glint in his eye, he turned and ran at his target. Ground Zero: Eggy Dave's fork.

'Wait up – I ain't got it on y...'

As he struggled to free his tackle, he contemplated the strange chain of events that was about to transpire, yet could do nothing to prevent as his nemesis careened toward him, time slowing to a crawl as if he was swimming through custard, boot flying relentlessly toward his stinking bishop.

'Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarn - WHUMP!'

Out for a duck.

Then, clutching his bloated purple tumescence reminiscent of an aubergine, he was sick in a hedge.
